Life Jackets, Beacons, Life Rafts, and Emergency Equipment Records

By Interstate Marine ·

An emergency equipment inventory is useful only if it distinguishes what is present from what has been inspected or serviced. A life jacket, beacon, raft, emergency bilge pump, and first-aid kit do not share one maintenance procedure.

Interstate Marine offers life-jacket and throwable-flotation condition inspections, emergency beacon battery or service-date checks, and emergency equipment inventory. Life-raft inspection and servicing are arranged through an approved station; Interstate Marine is not that station.

Learn about Boat Maintenance.

Inventory equipment individually

Interstate Marine lists life jacket condition inspection, throwable flotation equipment inspection, emergency beacon battery and service-date checks, emergency bilge pump testing, first-aid kit replenishment, and emergency equipment inventory.

Record equipment identity and relevant service dates. For beacons, a battery-date check is not the same as confirming registration information. Use NOAA's official beacon-registration resource for that separate owner task.

Arrange life-raft servicing through an approved station

Life raft inspection and servicing go through an approved station. When discussing a raft, identify the manufacturer, model, and current service record. Ask Interstate Marine about the station arrangement and keep the station's service documentation with the raft record.

Do not treat a raft's presence on board as proof of current servicing. Likewise, finding flotation equipment in a locker does not describe its condition or suitability.

Keep an actionable record

List equipment that was inspected, dates that were checked, supplies that were replenished, and concerns that remain unresolved. That record is more useful than a single entry saying “safety gear done.”

Before a maintenance visit, gather the inventory and available documentation. Requirements depend on the vessel and where it is used; the listed service tasks should not be presented as a complete legal compliance determination. Use official boating resources for applicable requirements while keeping Interstate Marine request specific to the agreed maintenance work.

Keep beacon registration separate from battery-service dates

NOAA's beacon-registration service addresses registration information. Registration records and the beacon's manufacturer-specified battery/service record are different things, and both deserve attention.

Identify the beacon and keep its label details, service dates, and registration information with the emergency-equipment records. Also record life-jacket and throwable-equipment condition, emergency bilge-pump checks, first-aid replenishment, and the inventory actually reviewed. For a life raft, keep the service-station paperwork with the raft's identification. Interstate Marine's raft-related service goes through an approved station. The approved station carries out the life-raft servicing. A complete record helps an owner see what is current and what still needs action.
