Winterizing Boat Plumbing, Livewells, Holding Tanks, and Washdown Systems

By Interstate Marine ·

An engine can be prepared for storage while other water-containing systems remain outside the service request. Freshwater plumbing, wastewater tanks, livewells, and washdown equipment should be identified separately when discussing boat winterization.

Interstate Marine offers freshwater plumbing, holding-tank, livewell, and washdown winterization. Identify installed generator or HVAC water circuits as well; refrigerant service is separate from winterizing a water circuit.

Learn about Winterization.

Inventory the installations

Interstate Marine's seasonal list includes freshwater plumbing winterization, holding-tank winterization, and livewell and washdown winterization. The plan must account for the water-containing systems actually installed, which can extend to generators and HVAC. Auxiliary equipment also has separate maintenance needs: see the guides to generator oil and coolant, watermaker flushing and preservation, and HVAC refrigerant service. Refrigerant service is distinct from winterizing an HVAC water circuit.

Write down the tanks, fixtures, pumps, and other water circuits you know are aboard. If an equipment list is incomplete, say so rather than assuming a system is absent.

Explain the previous treatment

Tell Interstate Marine what was drained, flushed, or treated and provide the previous service record if available. Use the system's actual requirements to establish how winterizing antifreeze is applied or removed. Different equipment may require different procedures.

Holding tanks also need their own service description. Black-water pump-out and rinsing and gray-water draining and cleaning are separately listed tasks; they should not disappear inside a vague engine winterization request.

Plan the return to service now

Keep the seasonal record where it can be used during recommissioning. Freshwater-system flushing and sanitization, pump testing, and electrical checks are separately listed spring tasks.

A useful seasonal record identifies the tank or circuit, the treatment or draining procedure performed, and the step needed before returning that system to use. That detail helps the next appointment begin with evidence rather than guesswork.

Owners bringing a boat to Belton can discuss these installations with Interstate Marine before arranging seasonal work. Include the equipment information and intended storage conditions so the requested service reflects the complete water-system inventory.

Trace each water path through the installed system

Xylem's Jabsco winter-maintenance guide emphasizes that inlet and discharge paths both matter for applicable systems. Protecting one pump does not establish that every connected hose or holding component was addressed.

List freshwater plumbing, holding tanks, livewells, baitwells, washdown, and other water-containing equipment. Identify any watermaker separately because membrane preservation follows its own instructions. Ask for the winterization record to name the circuits protected and the steps needed before reuse. This is more useful than an entry saying only “antifreeze added.” Product choice and treatment must suit the actual system, and collected fluids need appropriate handling.

Frequently asked questions

Does engine winterization automatically cover plumbing?

No. Name freshwater, holding, livewell, washdown, and other installed systems in the request.

Should I save the winterizing product and system record?

Yes. That information helps define the appropriate removal or recommissioning procedure for the equipment.

How can I discuss plumbing, livewell, and holding-tank winterization with Interstate Marine?

Share your water-system inventory and previous seasonal record with Interstate Marine. Discuss which circuits are to be prepared and how spring recommissioning should account for the completed treatment. Use Request Service to send the details, or call (512) 801-0884. A request does not automatically confirm an appointment.
