Boat Winterization: Engine Oil, Fuel, Gear Oil, and Cooling Circuits
By Interstate Marine ·
A winterization request should name the engine and the systems being prepared. “Winterize the boat” may include more than engine treatment, but it also should not imply identical procedures for every installation. Start with model information and the boat's planned storage conditions.
Interstate Marine offers engine storage treatment, fuel stabilization, oil or gear-oil service, and cooling-system draining or antifreeze protection as specified. Winterization must follow the installed equipment, not a universal procedure.

Define the engine work
Interstate Marine's seasonal scope includes fuel stabilization, engine storage treatment, engine oil and gear oil service, and cooling-system draining or antifreeze protection as specified.
These are separate tasks. Fuel stabilization and removal of stale or contaminated fuel address different service needs. Likewise, gear oil service should identify whether the boat has an outboard lower unit or sterndrive.
Identify cooling circuits
Tell Interstate Marine whether the engine has raw-water cooling, closed cooling, or both types of circuit. Provide the manual and previous seasonal record when available. The applicable manufacturer procedure should determine draining or antifreeze treatment rather than a blanket rule for all engines.
Generators and other water-containing installations also need to be identified if present. An engine-only request should not be assumed to cover every system aboard.
Prepare the records
List the last oil and gear oil service, fuel condition concerns, operating hours, and any known leaks or cooling warnings. Note equipment that was already treated so Interstate Marine can discuss the remaining work accurately.
After seasonal service, keep a record of the specific circuits and fluids addressed. That helps define what must be checked when the boat returns to use.
For owners using Belton Lake, Stillhouse Hollow Lake, or Lake Georgetown, seasonal preparation is an equipment question. The boat's actual installation and storage plan are more useful than a generic regional checklist.
Storage treatment should match the engine and the season of inactivity
Mercury's outboard winterization guidance addresses more than cold-weather protection. Fuel, lubrication, and storage preparation still need their own plan.
Tell Interstate Marine how long the boat is expected to remain unused, where it will be kept, and what water-containing equipment is installed. Engine storage treatment, oil service, fuel stabilization, and cooling-circuit protection are separate tasks. Do not assume the method for an outboard applies to an inboard or generator. Keep the products and completed work in the layup record so spring commissioning can account for what was treated, disconnected, drained, or protected.
Frequently asked questions
Does fuel stabilizer replace contaminated-fuel removal?
No. Stabilization and stale or contaminated fuel removal are separately listed tasks.
Does every engine get the same antifreeze procedure?
No. Draining or antifreeze protection is specified according to the installed system's requirements.
Where can Belton Lake and Stillhouse Hollow Lake boat owners request winterization?
Interstate Marine offers boat winterization at its Belton, Texas, shop. Customers bring their boats to 8398 S. IH35 Service Rd. Contact Interstate Marine to discuss the engine and water-containing systems that need preparation.
How can I discuss engine winterization with Interstate Marine?
Discuss your engine model, storage plan, prior winterization, and other water-containing equipment with Interstate Marine. We can identify the agreed seasonal work and explain which systems need their own service entries. Use Request Service to send the details, or call (512) 801-0884. A request does not automatically confirm an appointment.
